The optimized floor plans led to much higher utilization rates, especially of workstations, while collaboration spaces were right-sized to fit team needs.
CHG Healthcare, the nation’s largest physician staffing company, was facing significant challenges in understanding how employees were using office spaces in a post-pandemic hybrid work environment. With a flexible attendance policy set by individual divisions, CHG Healthcare needed to adapt their workplace designs plans to support the unique needs of individual team working preferences.
CHG Healthcare wanted to understand the effectiveness and impact of design changes on utilization at their Florida office. They partnered with Steelcase to develop and implement new designs for the sales division that heavily featured open and flexible collaboration spaces, but needed to better understand whether the designs implemented were meeting the needs of their teams. Additionally, CHG Healthcare wanted to track the effectiveness of new workplace designs to be able to adapt their office environments in real-time.
CHG Healthcare deployed VergeSense sensors to understand the effectiveness of the workplace concept spaces and alternative collaboration areas for the sales team. VergeSense sensors were critical in measuring space utilization and determining whether the designs met employees' needs.
Goals:
Initial Adjustments: Data showed that while traditional workstations saw the most traffic, alternative workspaces were being underutilized. Sales teams preferred to collaborate at their desks rather than in conference rooms or open areas like lounges, and liked having access to large monitors or double screens to support their work. At the same time, the teams didn’t want to go back to traditional, enclosed workspaces, so they removed temporary desks and pod workstations and replaced them with desks to accommodate immediate needs.
Layout Optimization: Next, CHG Healthcare looked for layout optimizations opportunities on the North and South sides of the floors. VergeSense helped them pinpoint what furniture wasn’t working on the North side so that they could add desks to get them through the next phase of the project. Additionally, they identified that open space and lighting were key to employee preferences and ways of working, so on the South side they redesigned the space to be more open and light. They also identified a number of underutilized conference rooms, redistributed people between the North and South sides to balance density, developed an ideal furniture layout based on space type utilization, and repurposed the games and kitchen area into a coffee bar.
Executive Build-Out Area: CHG Healthcare built out a new executive area with offices and workspaces and has leveraged VergeSense to measure the utilization of the new space configuration.
VergeSense supported CHG Healthcare to make three significant design changes, allowing them to optimize space utilization and improve employee satisfaction. They leveraged granular desk and furniture utilization data to guide every decision.
Increased Utilization: The optimized floor plans led to much higher utilization rates, especially of workstations, while collaboration spaces were right-sized to fit team needs.
Data-Driven Decision Making: CHG Healthcare used VergeSense data and insights to plan future workspace changes with confidence, ensuring that the spaces met real employee needs.
